Year of Scrappy Triangles - Block 28

Hello!

Here is Block 28 in a Year of Scrappy Triangles. (You can find all the block patterns here.) This block was a lot of fun. It's pretty awesome when you can get six triangles to meet with perfect points.

And oh, my goodness, the possibilities for secondary designs with four blocks put together are huge! I can't wait to see what you make! If you want to see what others are making, you can find pictures (500 of them!) on Instagram with the #yearofscrappytriangles.

Block 27 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

We're on the down hill stretch! I've had a couple of questions about whether this 'year' will extend to the end of 2018 or for 52 weeks. Only 52 weeks, sorry. It'll be time for me to switch to another project by then. But for now, let's get piecing!

This fun block uses 2" strips of fabric for the scrappy sections. I have a lot of those, and got some more a few weeks ago. We have a 'giveaway' table at our guild meetings, and I picked up the cute kitchen prints there. (Like I needed more scraps.) So many scraps, so little time!

Year of Scrappy Triangles - Block 26

quilt, quilt blocks, free quilt patterns, foundation paper piecing, paper piecing, beginner quilt block, beginner paper piecing, quilts, scrap quilt

Can you believe we are half way through the Year of Scrappy Triangles? Crazy! I am getting excited to see it all come together. I think I might start sewing some of the blocks into larger units so it isn't so overwhelming at the end.

With this block, you can use extra 5" charms for the triangle units, which I love doing. These types of blocks seem to come together quickly.

Last week, I sent this pdf pattern to my Newsletter Friends. If you haven't signed up yet and would like to get the pattern, you can click here and I'll get it right to you. Sometimes my husband and kids aren't the most enthusiastic quilt fans, but everyone was loving this mini quilt, so it must be a winner. Enjoy!

Block 25 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

Hello! I am loving this week's block. There is another great square, perfect for putting a large fussy cut print into. I really like the bug print I used, but I don't know if I should.... Is that a dung beetle? Do I really want a dung beetle on my bed? I guess so. Maybe it's the biologist in me.

Dung beetle or no, I hope you have a great time making this block. Have a wonderful Easter week!

PS. In a day or two I'm going to be sending out a special FPP pattern as Easter treat to my newsletter friends. If you aren't on the list yet and want to sign up, click here.

Block 24 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

Spring is officially here! Now the sun just needs to come out. But for now, I'll just have to make do with these quilt blocks. Do they remind you of rays of sunshine too? This is another fast block, perfect for using up extra strips of fabric.

I decided to top the 'rays' with a triangle so that the final quilt construction will be less bulky. Can you imagine having four of these blocks meet in a quilt? It would mean 16 seams intersecting. Way too much bulk!

In other news, I basted and quilted a twin sized quilt yesterday. I know! Insane! I was in a rather grouchy mood and decided I was going to take the day off and sew. (Yes, my preschooler did happen to watch a lot of TV.)

It is amazing what you can do when you actually block off time to sew. I had been putting off basting this quilt for months, but once I did, I was on a roll and decided to start quilting. I used a meandering free motion quilting design and it went super fast. I hope to be able to bind it today or tomorrow. Yea!

You can find the free pattern for this quilt here.

Block 23 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

Hello there! This week's Scrappy Triangle is so easy, it kind of feels like cheating. If you want to jump (back) in, this is the block to start with. You'll make it in 5 minutes and think, "Wow, that was fast! I need to make another block." Then you'll be hooked and won't be able to stop. Totally addicting.

Plus, with the right fabric placement, there is a really nice woven design. Love!

Block 22 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

Hello! Sorry, I'm a bit late posting this. I ran out of printer ink and couldn't do a final test print until after I went to the store.

This block is pretty straight forward. There are some fun opportunities for fussy cutting the center triangle - which I did not take advantage of.  But I found that I had the perfect print to use on one of the side stripes. Love those yellow flying geese!

Block 21 - Year of Scrappy Triangles and Giveaway Winner

low volume quilt, foundation paper piecing, paper piecing, quilt, quilts, quilting, quilt along, scraps, scrap quilt, addictive quilts

Last week I was at a quilt retreat and someone brought in a tub of scraps to share with everyone. I grabbed some (because I need more scraps?) and made these blocks. Pink, tan, flowers, dots, and horseshoes? Perfect!

Most of the time I use different scraps for my blocks, but this time they are pretty much the same. I'll just have to spread them out a bit in the final quilt.

Now for the giveaway! I just want to say, "Congratulations!" to everyone who completed their set of 20 blocks! Keeping up with a quilt-along is no small feat. I'm really impressed and everyone's blocks look so great! Unfortunately, I can't send you all a bundle of fabric, so I gave each picture a number and randomly selected a winner. And the winner is..... Lara @forestbuckets! Congratulations!

Links to all the blocks can be found here.

Block 20 - Year of Scrappy Triangles Giveaway

quilt blocks, quilt along, paper piecing, learn how to paper piece, easy paper piecing, foundation paper piecing, scrap quilt, use up scraps,

Hi! Can you believe we are on week 20 of a Year of Scrappy Triangles?
In this cute block, strips surround a square that would be perfect for fussy cutting. This is a fairly straightforward block, but remember to add fabric in the order listed on the pattern (I almost didn't!) or else it won't work.

You can find more info and links to all the blocks here.

To encourage everyone to stay caught up on their blocks, I am having a giveaway this week! To enter to win this cute fat quarter fabric bundle, post a picture of all 20 of your blocks by Tuesday, February 27th at 9 am Central. There are a couple of ways to do this.
  1. Post a picture on Instagram with the hashtag #yearofscrappytrianglesgiveaway. If it doesn't have the hashtag, I might not find it. Also use the #yearofscrappytriangles hashtag and @sewnbyleila, so people can find all of the great Scrappy Triangle pictures people have been posting.
  2. Post a picture in the comments of the Giveaway Post on my Facebook page. (Feel free to stop by to Like, Follow, and Share too!)

Block 19 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

scrap quilt, paper piecing, foundation paper piecing, free quilt patterns, beginning paper piecing, scrap quilt, scrap quilt block 6"

Hello! Here is the paper piecing pattern for Block 19 of a Year of Scrappy Triangles. This scrappy half square triangle focuses on using up all the narrow strips that haunt the bottom of scrap baskets. Well, at least mine. I could have made 20 of these blocks, no problem.

This block also has a great secondary design. The great thing about paper piecing is that you can get those narrow strips to match up every single time. Brilliant!

Next week, we will have a Scrappy Triangle link-up and giveaway! You will be able to post a picture of your 20 Scrappy Triangle blocks and everyone who links a picture of all 20 blocks will be entered to win this cute fat quarter fabric bundle. If you have fallen a bit behind - or want to start! - now is the time to catch up. It sounds a bit overwhelming, and if they were 'real' quilt blocks, it would be a lot of work, but these blocks really do go together quickly. You could start now and have them done in two weeks without too much trouble. Grab a friend, grab your scraps, and get sewing!
